School Bus

A donation was made in memory of School Bus by the doctors and staff at Valley Veterinary Hospital on Sep 22, 2026.

School Bus was a 16hh 19 year old Walkaloosa mare. She was one of a kind horse, she was my all time soul horse. She was a turbo charged automatic horse, in other words, she had a very light touch and very smart. School Bus did have cushing's disease, which we had under control with the help of Dr. Hayden. The morning of August 31, I turned all 3 of my horses out to pasture for the day, School Bus, Snickers (aks Thunder Chicken) and Scout. School Bus was just fine. When I got home from work, I went to pull all 3 horses in, and School Bus was walking like she was not only really drunk but also couldn't hold her head up at all. I quickly examined her and called Dr. Hayden. I was not able to safely haul her with the fear of her falling in the horse trailer, she could hardly stand as it was. Dr. Hayden examined her and treated her, but this sudden change was confusing. Tuesday morning she seemed a little better, she was able to hold her head up for the most part. I was giving her banamine per what was prescribed, she was also given steriods and a few other shots to help. Thinking she might have a pinch nerve in her neck, still unsure. Tuesday evening she was the still the same as that morning. She was eating, drinking water, pooping and peeing, but she still walked like she was drunk. By Wednesday morning, Shool Bus did not seem to be getting better, she like she took a step back, but she was still holding her head up. By the time I got home from work on Wednesday she went way backwards. I again, called Dr. Hayden. I had to hold School Bus's head up and she was not only drooling, she was starting to blow bubbles from her mouth and was trying to sleep in my arms. I knew then what I had to do. This broken my heart more than words can say. When Dr. Hayden came out, he even agreed that she will not recover from what ever was going on. At that point we believe that she had a neurological disorder and possibly a pinched nerve as well, still puzzled by it all. We agreed that on September 2nd, it was best to let School Bus go to sleep. I trully believe that when I was holding her head up and she felt safe in my arms to sleep and her way of saying it is okay and that she knew I loved her so much and loving me back by letting me know it was time. Anybody could ride a School Bus, there will never be another one like her. I am very blessed to have had her, and I still have 2 amazing horses that I love dearly.
